The Backstage Academy of Performing Arts has been delivering tuition for the London College of Music and Media (LCM) examinations for over four years and our results speak for themselves with distinctions being achieved across the board with some achieving 90/100! Outstanding results! LCM examinations are now also validated to give UCAS points from grade 6+ which are a huge asset to any students wishing to progress onto higher education and are internationally recognised.

The LCM training is taught within a small group setting and all taught in the same session. We offer LCM examinations in musical theatre, popular singing and acting. Training is separated into two sub sections 1) Singing 2) Acting.

LONDON COLLEGE OF MUSIC AND MEDIA (LCM) SINGING (MUSICAL THEATRE, POPULAR SINGING) AND ACTING

                                              SINGING

LCM classes are focused on vocal singing training to develop confidence, vocal

quality, strength, tone, pitch control, breath control and performance preparation

                                         and presentation.

In musical theatre vocal training is tailored to bring characters to life through vocal performance and typical musical theatre presentation adding acting, vocal accents, props, costumes and lively presentation via appropriate movement.

In popular singing vocal training is tailored to work on technical abilities to become a well-rounded singer of popular music from various decades.

So whether you see yourself as the latest Gabrielle from High School Musical or the latest Lady GaGa or maybe Danny from Grease or Robbie Williams the LCM classes at the Academy are definitely for you covering a vast style of music to suit most tastes.

Theory is also taught and a folder containing a portfolio of work from training will be kept and taken into the exam to be discussed with the examiner. Live musicians are also often used throughout training to add that extra special learning experience.

ACTING

LCM acting focuses on principles of acting which develops you as an actor/actress by you connecting the mastery of techniques with imagination and creative approach to your performance work. Actors need the time and space to explore the processes and skills needed to develop the craft of acting to characterise a performance physically, vocally and emotionally.

At the Academy we deliver acting in LCM in a highly unique way by exploring the techniques given to us by practitioners such as Stanislavski and Brecht within various styles of acting that will create realistic and emotionally charged performances. Plays are studied and monologues explored through a series of sessions based around a given technique or theme.

Creative writing is also taught with scripts being devised by the students and the process of devising and analysis studied in detail.

Students will study texts, improvisation, drama, comedy, emotional range and characterisation work that will throw students into a range of acting opportunities in an encouraging environment to build confidence gradually. Training develops skills, knowledge and attitudes which will connect you to the craft of acting. All work created is then performed at the end of year showcase

MUSICAL THEATRE

Musical theatre is an extremely popular art form which combines singing, dancing, acting and movement. Taking many forms from large scale Broadway and West End productions such as Cabaret, Chicago, Annie, Lion King, Phantom of the Opera, Grease, High School Musical, Guys and Dolls, Wicked and We Will Rock You, musical theatre offers a vast repertoire which can be explored and performed using all three disciplines of singing, dancing and acting.

At the Backstage Academy musical theatre is the home where we began and we deliver highly motivated and energetic tuition where performers learn all the technical skills as well as the knowledge behind the art form by creating solo performances as well as duets, trio’s and ensembles.

Recreating some of the most famous musicals can be extremely fun and the learning process hits all the key areas of singing, dancing and acting as we help bring our favourite characters to life.

Classes are delivered in a highly unique way where set studies are taught according to the individual learning needs and loves of the class. A musical is studied over a set number of weeks exploring the story, characters and themes. Students will also learn creative practice by devising their own theatre including monologues and musical theatre performance.

Performers are then thrown into the heart of a musical to learn set pieces looking in detail at the singing, dancing and acting involved with the pieces. All work generated is then performed at our special end of year showcase at the theatre in full costume, props and performance elements to have the ultimate musical theatre experience.

Musical theatre is ideal for anybody to join with classes available for ages 8 – 19yrs from beginner to advanced levels. So why not come along and submerge yourself into whatever character you’ve always dreamed of being.

LCM classes are an ideal way for any student to train in all three disciplines of performing including singing, dancing and acting. LCM class is perfect for anyone who just loves performing as the exams are completely optional which means students can attend classes for fun and then take the exams if they wish to as an added bonus. Please note students in the LCM class do not take part in the Backstage Academy Company shows as they have their own theatrical showcase at the end of the academic year. Any students wishing to take part in our parge scale productions must either audition for the Youth Company or take part in a dance class to gain a role as a chorus dancer.
